Description
Alexander, son of King Philip II and Olympias, was born in Pella in the summer of 356 BC (probably on 20 or 21 July).
He was educated by Aristotle from the age of 13 to about 16, in an environment that combined philosophy, literature (especially the Iliad, which he carried with him on campaigns) and basic military skills. At the same time, he practiced politics, administration and strategy with his father.
At the age of 20, after the assassination of Philip (in October 336 BC in Aegia), Alexander was crowned king of Macedonia.
Two years later, in 334 BC, he began an ambitious campaign against the Persian Empire. With a very small military force but with brilliant strategists, he won a series of decisive battles — at Thermopylae, Issus, Gaugamela — and advanced deep into Asia and as far as the Indus River.
In 323 BC, while in Babylon, he fell seriously ill and died on June 10 or 11 at the age of 32. His body was eventually transported to Egypt, where he was later buried in Alexandria.
Alexander’s lifelong companions were his famous black horse, Bucephalus, which remained faithful to him until his death, and the papyri of the Iliad, which he never parted with. His influence was immense during his lifetime — he spread Greek culture, created the Hellenistic era, and founded cities like Alexandria.
Why he stands out historically:
He united Greece under Macedonia and defeated the Persian Empire.
He built an empire stretching from the Mediterranean to the Indus.
He demonstrated strategic genius with fewer resources.
He left a legacy of culture and administration that has remained influential in the world for centuries.
Alexander’s deeds and legends live on through time and continue to inspire — a legacy that transcends his geographical boundaries and is unsurpassed.
